Kamichama Karin Anime Review

I've been promising this for some time now, so here it is:

Well, I've seen 3 episodes so far (only 3 have come out) and I hate to admit it but its just as I expected. Koge Donbo's work is just too good for television. Anime cannot match her deatil and beauty. Its not as bad, art wise, as Pita Ten, but the character design could've been better. I wasn't expecting Haruhi Suzumiya-good, its just...simplified. Although, if you look past the slight changes in character and costume design, they have stuck to the story surprisingly well. Unlike the manga however, the series starts with Kamichama Karin-chu and Karin appears to be sent back in time to the previous year.
The next big thing, and the one thing that many people are debating is the opening theme song. The song, 'Ankoku Tengoku', is by ALI PROJECT. I was surprised that they picked them to do the theme because for a magical-girl anime, the seemed a little...emo. The song itself is actually fairly 'dark', and many fans don't like it. I however think it fits pretty well because when you're dealing with a series in which tweens are given godly powers, a cousin who is not "whole" and whose other half is evil incarnate, cloning, and a wealthy almost vaudville or Victorian setting; a dark song would work. I've found it pretty catchy and I'm trying to learn the lyrics.
Last, but certainly not least. The seiyuu. I had listened to a demo of Karin's voice actress before I saw the show. She went through the various voices she could do and there was one that I liked. It wasn't a Rizelmine-falsetto, it actually sounded like a 12 year old girl and not a hamster on caffiene. Sadly, Karin does not have that voice. Her's seems a little to high for a heroine. I think that voice would be better for Himeka. Oh Himeka, poor, poor Himeka. Do not call her on 'Phone-a-Friend' for 'Who Wants to be a Millionaire'. Her voice box couldn't handle the 30 second limit. God, she talks SLOW. And quiet. Too wispy. Kazune plensantly surprised me, though. His voice fits fairly well. Kirio and Kirika are excellent, as is Micchi (who has only made a small appearence in Ep. 1 so far). I can't wait to hear Shii-chan's voice.
Overall, I don't think girls' animes get as much care and hard work put in as shounen anime. I would though recommend this if you've read at least the first 4 volumes of the anime (throughly). If you have, you'll know what the characters are saying, even if you don't understand Japanese. Yes, they stick THAT CLOSE to the original script. However, I hope and pray that this charming series doesn't meet the same fate as so many other magical-girls before it. Slaughter by 4kids TV.

***1/2 out of five stars.
